Most of our district testing is done! We still have the reading fluency test on January 20. I have been reading with the students and there are some who I am a little worried about. The benchmark for January's test is 120 words per minute with 98% accuracy. Please have your student reading aloud a couple of pages each day. If you want to know how fast they read, you can have them read a 4th grade level book for one minute, count up all the words they read and subtract however many errors they made (added words, skipped words or mispronounced words). A good way to catch them up on fluency is to shadow read with them. Read a paragraph to them while they track it in the book, read the same paragraph together at your speed (they have to keep up) and then have them read the same paragraph again by themselves (trying to keep the same speed).
Math: We are working hard on fractions. Tuesday 11-7, Wednesday 11-8 Thursday Review and Friday Test. The book and lessons are available on Pearson.
Language Arts: We are continuing comparing and contrasting as a reading strategy and in writing. The Reading Street test will be on Thursday. We are also doing a lot of writing and using Utah Compose at school to get them used to typing essays. The SAGE writing test will be in February this year.
Science: Test on Tuesday on Rocks/Minerals/Soil in French class. Starting Fossils.
Social Studies: Early People and American Indians
French: narratives and fairy tales, the sound "in"
Homework: read 20 min/night, spelling, homework page, Reflex math and Pearson (if needed), recorders
Have a great week!
