We have started long division! Many of the students are starting to get the hang of it, but many are still struggling with all of the steps. I would recommend having your child do one or two each night at home until they are more confident in the steps. If you go to my blog at Hysong4.blogspot.com, there are two websites that help with long division. The one that is named 'long division' will actually walk you right through each step. The one called 'long division solver' will show the answer with all of the steps written out. This would be a good one to check their work with at home.
Change in spelling: I will continue to teach the students the spelling patterns like I have been doing. The district has told us though that since we are teaching patterns, the students should be able to apply that spelling pattern to any word containing that pattern. Therefore, even though we send home a spelling list of words, we shouldn't only be testing them on those 20 words. To comply with this, I will be picking out 8 words off of the list (instead of the usual 10) and adding two additional words that contain the same pattern to test them on. I have spoken to the students about this and they understand the changes.
