We have had a great start to the school year and we are having fun getting to know all of our new students! This blog will be the main way that we will communicate with parents about what is happening in class and at school, so if you know someone who hasn't signed up for automatic emails from the blog, please tell them to sign up. It also helps if you bookmark this blog on your computer in order to make access to it easier for your child. I apologize in advance for how long this is...
We sent home permission slips and recorder order forms the first day of school. The permission slips were due Friday, so if you don't have them in yet, please bring them Monday. The recorder orders are due this week. Also, please either order an emergency bag from the PTA or bring in your own.
Math: We have already started our math curriculum and we are beginning with multiplication. We will be doing one side of a math page in English and other side in French. There will be a reteaching section on this page in English, so you and your child will be able to read how to do the lesson if they miss class or are struggling. This week we are planning to do lessons 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-6, and 1-7. The math book is available to you online on the Pearson website. If your child starts to struggle in a certain area, or is sick, preteaching a lesson the night before can really make a difference and keep them caught up. I will also assign the lessons on Pearson if your child needs the extra practice, but this is optional. I will print out access pages next week for you.
Language Arts: We will be starting the first unit this week. More information on our Reading Street topics will come home on Mondays with the weekly homework. In 4th/5th grade, since the English side also teaches math, we will only be taking 3 of the 5 weekly tests in each of the 6 units. We will be doing lots of writing also (the writing SAGE test this year is in February, so we have a lot to learn in a short amount of time). Book Report packets went home Friday.
Social Studies: We will be starting with Utah and its counties. Look forward to a county report coming home in Sept.
Science: Water Cycle
French: They will be starting their first unit about starting school and learning new vocabulary.
Homework: spelling, vocabulary, math page, 20+ minutes of reading/night, and practice keyboarding (there are websites on my blog) - due on Friday. If needed, memorize multiplication facts! - it will make math easier and more fun for them = a better and more successful year.
***We received more volunteers than we can take on our first field trip to the Great Salt Lake, so we will just draw out names and send you an email notice on Monday if you will be chaperoning. Thank you so much for being so willing to help out! If you don't go on this field trip, there will be at least 3 other opportunities for you to go later on in the year.
Have a great week!
